Hurriyat calls for shutdown today
Srinagar, May 24: Restrictions were imposed in parts of Kashmir on Friday, a day after Zakir Musa, chief of a group affiliated to the Al-Qaeda, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Tral.
Educational institutions remained closed and curfew like restrictions were imposed in some parts of Kashmir as a precautionary measure, officials said.
Mobile Internet services remained suspended across the valley and the services would be restored after improvement in the situation, they said.
On last Thursday evening, spontaneous protests broke out in Shopian, Pulwama, Awantipora and downtown Srinagar, with people raising pro-Musa slogans, prompting authorities to impose curfew in some parts of the Valley.
According to local reports, a large number of people participated in the funeral prayers of Musa and several rounds of ‘Namaz-e-Janaza’ were held to accommodate the huge rush of people who had gathered at his native village Noorpura in Awantipora of Pulwama district.
They said the people braved curfew and rains to reach Musa’s native village where he was laid to rest after several rounds of funeral prayers.
Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has called for shutdown against the killing of militant commander Zakir Musa and a civilian in Naira, Pulwama.
A spokesman of Hurriyat said that shutdown has been called on Saturday across the state against the killing of Zakir Musa and the civilian, Zahoor Ahmad of Naira in Pulwama on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani paid tributes to slain militant commander Zakir Musa, saying people were indebted to his “sacrifices” for striving to implement “divine law” in Kashmir.
Paying tributes to Zakir Musa, All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman, Syed Ali Geelani in the statement said: “Whosoever strives for implementation of divine law in his land, with his conviction and dedication are the real heros of the movement and nation is indebted to hail their precious sacrifices.”
“The best way to pay homage to our martyrs is to support the freedom struggle,” he added.
Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday issued a statement regarding Tral gunfight saying that on a credible input, a cordon and search operation was launched by police, CRPF and army at Batpora in Dadsara area of Awantipora.
“During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter,” said the spokesman.
“In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of encounter. The slain militant was identified as Zakir Rashid Bhat alias Musa of Noorpora Tral,” he said.
Inspector General of Police Swamyam Prakash Pani said the operation was conducted with utmost precaution and proper care was taken to avoid collateral damage.
“He was one of the oldest militant and wanted for several terror-related crimes,” he added. (Inputs from PTI)

Srinagar, May 24: Jammu and Kashmir police Friday termed the killing of Ansaar Gazwatul Hind chief Zakir Rashid Bhat alias Zakir Musa as a major success, stating that he was the only surviving militant of the erstwhile Burhan Wani group, who later floated a separate organisation.
A police spokesman said his killing was a major success as “Musa had a long history of terror crime since 2013”.
“He was initially associated with proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen but later floated Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH),” the police spokesman said.
Musa was declared as proclaimed offender by a special court of the National Investigation Agency in Punjab’s Mohali earlier this month in connection with serial blasts in Jalandhar in September last year, the spokesman added.

Srinagar, May 24 (PTI) Barring some clashes between groups of youths and security forces, the situation in Kashmir remained largely peaceful on Friday as prayers were held for Zakir Musa, the chief of an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the valley, who was killed in an encounter, officials said.
There were some protests and clashes after Friday prayers at a few places, the officials said, adding that the security forces exercised restraint.
“The situation remained largely normal and under control,” they said.
The students of Kashmir University offered prayers for the militant commander who was killed in an encounter with security forces in Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
