People are failing to make judicious use of electricity, say officials

Sopore, Nov 12: Power Development Department (PDD) has failed to ensure adequate electricity supply, especially during morning and evening hours, in Sopore Town and its adjacent village and thereby causing immense hardships to the inhabitants.

A group of locals hailing from different areas of Sopore Town and its adjacent villages told Kashmir Images that PDD is not only resorting to unscheduled power cuts but the said areas are also left to reel under complete darkness for days together.

They said that electricity shortage is being witnessed in areas including Noor Bagh, Krankshivan Colony, Iqbal Nagar, Arampora, Batpora, Main Chowk and other areas of town while as adjacent villages like Dangerpora, Duroo, Shiva, Bomia, Tarzua, Botingoo, Goripora-Darpora are facing the same problem.

The residents here said that they are mulling to stage massive protests against PDD for their failure to ensure adequate electricity supply in their areas.

“We have been paying our electricity bills without fail but the electricity is not being supplied as per the schedule issued by PDD. The students have to suffer a lot as exams of different classes are underway and without electricity they are not able to prepare well,” said Ali Mohammad Dar resident of Iqbal Nagar Sopore.

The problem of electricity shortage is worse in villages as people here complained that electricity supply in their villages remains so scarce that they don’t get it for more than an hour since past few weeks.

“When we approached the PDD officials with our complaints they informed us that electricity shortage is a result of low water level in rivers,” they added.

The villagers threatened of staging massive protests against PDD if they failed to provide adequate electricity supplies to their areas.

Speaking to Kashmir Images Superintending Engineer, EM&RE Circle-Sopore Mohammad Shafi Wani said, “People are failing to make judicious use of electricity as they are operating lamps, heaters and geysers all at once which is the main reason for massive load shedding in the areas.”

“In order to fix load shedding, the department has issued a new power curtailment schedule which has been put under trail since last two days to check income and outgoing loads. Once the curtailment is approved we will implement a permanent curtailment schedule to stop electricity crises in the areas,” he added.
