Jaish militant killed in Handwara shootout
Handwara: A Jaish-e-Muhammad militant was killed in a brief shootout in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday, police said.
A police spokesman said that a group of militants moving through Handwara was intercepted by a naka party near Chattipora.
He said that militants opened fire, triggering a brief gunfight in which a militant was killed.
The slain militant was identified as Ishtiyaaq from Pakistan, said the spokesman, adding that incriminating material was recovered from his possession.
“He was involved in a series of attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in the area,” said the spokesman.
However, some sources said that the militant died as a grenade he intended to lob at police exploded in his hand.
