The catastrophic occurrence of Karbala is not a plain chronicle of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and the beloved son of Hazrat Ali and Fatima (Allah be pleased with them) but a sincere attempt at safeguarding the ideology of Islam. Husain’s RA performance is associated with the collective life of the Muslim Ummah.  One year after the birth of Hazrat Imam Hasan (Allah be pleased with him), the propitious birth of Hazrat Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) took place in Medina. Hazrat Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) had in his veins the sacred blood of Holy Prophet SAW and was brought up in the holy lap of Fatima (Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Apostle and the Lady of Heaven. He got education from an erudite scholar like Hazrat Ali Murtaza (Allah be pleased with him). He was tutored by his maternal uncle, Hind bin Abi Hala and Hazrat Umar bin Khatab (Allah be pleased with him). He taught Hadiths to the following:

Hazart Hasan bin Ali

Hazrat Ali bin Husain

Sakina bint Husain

Fatima bint Husain

Zaid bin Husain

Imam Jafar

Imam Shabi

Hazrat Akramah Kuzemi

Sanan bin Ali Sanan Wasil

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar bin Uthman Farooque

A Sahabi ( Allah be pleased with him) narrates, ‘ Once the Messenger of Allah came to the Masjid to lead Magrib Sallah he made him seated beside him, but he lay prostrate, Hazrat  Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) mounted on his back. At this Prophet Muhammad SAW lengthened prostration and remained in the same state till Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) got down from his back. After the prayer was over, the companions of the Holy Prophet SAW  wanted to know the reason of lengthy prostration. Holy Prophet SAW said, ‘My son, Husain (Allah be pleased with him) had mounted on me and I did not like to make him fall down. One of the Sahaba (Allah be pleased with him) remarked, ‘What a good mount!’ Thereupon Holy Prophet SAW replied, ‘You see the mount but not the rider. If the mount is good, the rider is also Husain (Allah be pleased with him) who will be chief of the young men of Heaven’. It is enough for a loyal lover of Holy Prophet SAW  to ponder over how much love Hazrat Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) used to acquire.

From the march of events, Husain’s ailing son Zainul Abidin ( Allah be pleased with him) came to the conclusion that the calamity was inevitable, Husian’s sister Zainab ( Allah be pleased with him) came to know about it, she started shrieking. Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) tried to pacify her exhortation, “ What is all this sister? I am afraid our faith and endurance are overpowered by our passions”. Zainab replied how she could control herself. Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) answered that such was Allah’s Will. This reply added much to Zainab’s distress and she went out of control due to excessive grief. Witnessing this, Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) made a lengthy speech on patience and perseverance. He observed:

“Sister! Fear from Allah. Take solace from Allah’s mercy. Death is destined for each and every living being. Even those living in heaven cannot lead an eternal life. When everything is mortal in this world, why so much distress and grief with the thought of death. For every Muslim, the life of the Holy Prophet SAW  provides a model. What does this model teach us? It teaches us to have forbearance and perseverance. It also teaches us to rely on Allah and to reconcile ourselves to Allah’s Will. We should not deviate from that teaching”

Husain ( Allah be pleased with him), the Prince of martyrs, initiated the holy war against the oppressive regime of the Umayyads and refused to take the oath of allegiance to that authority, It is sacred legacy bequeathed to posterity by Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) that Muslims should never submit to any authority which defies the Divine Law, maintains itself by force and foists its arbitrary decisions on the people at the cost of inherent human freedom. Wherever Divine Authority is respected, the world will remember how the grandson of the greatest Benefactor of humanity SAW sacrificed his life in the defence of Truth.

When Hur invited Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) to Kufa, the men in Hur’s army were exhausted and desperately thirsty. Despite knowing that they were the enemy force, Imam Husain (Allah be pleased with him) instructed that water be taken out of limited supply and be given to Hur’s men. This act of Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) has not only evoked love and regard for his generosity, but has also taught the lesson of dissolving hatred. When Hur saw that the children of Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) were suffering from extreme thirst, because the army he was serving had prohibited water and food supplies from reaching his camp, he felt a sense of guilt overcome him. He remembered the act of kindness Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) had bestowed upon his army, despite his deception. Hur paid a visit to Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) to repent. Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) could have made Hur pay for his crime, but following the instructions of his Grandfather, Holy Prophet SAW , Imam Husain ( Allah be pleased with him) opted to forgive Hur.

Hazrat Umer’s (Allah be pleased with him) love for Hasnain (Allah be pleased with them)

Hazrat Umer (Allah be pleased with him) received a consignment of booty from Madayan. He gave one thousand ‘dirhams’ each to Iman Hasan and Iman Husain (Allah be pleased with them) and five hundred dirhams only to his son Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him). Thereupon Hazrat Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him), submitted to his father, Harzat Umer Farooque (Allah be pleased with him), ‘O caliph of the Muslims! I want to place before you the fact that I have accompanied the Holy Prophet SAW in battles while Hasan and Hussain (Allah be pleased with them) were child and Holy Prophet SAW loved me much and hence I should get equal share. Harzat Umer Farooque (Allah be pleased with him) replied, ‘Look! Husain (Allah be pleased with him) is better than you and the status of his father is higher than that of your father, for my Master SAW loved them.’

It is time to ponder over and learn about the true teachings of Islam rather than wide spreading sectarian disarray around the globe.
