As the forces intensified the searches, the militants opened fire on them triggering off a gunfight, they said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Swayam Prakash Pani confirmed the killing of two militants in an ongoing operation in woods of Sumular.

“One militant body has been recovered while another is visible and lying at the encounter site. The cordon and search is intact as the area is vast. No firing is going on presently,” the IGP added.

The IGP said that the operation was launched following inputs about the movement of militants in the forest area.

Meanwhile, militants on Thursday evening attacked a police station in Rajpora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Sources said that around 7:40 pm militants fired a rifle grenade towards the police station.

“Police immediately retaliated the fire,” sources said, adding, no loss of life or injuries were reported.

The entire area has been cordoned off to nab the militants, sources said.
