Shopian, September 07:  As the harvesting of apple crop nears, growers in Shopian district are worried as the fruit has not taken its full shape and color yet due to the limited rainfall, this year, in the valley.

Growers said that the increase in mercury has impacted the quality of the fruit. “We find it too early to start plucking of apple as we are waiting for a good rainfall which will prove beneficial for the fruit,” they added.

One of the Growers, Zahoor Ahmad said, “The increase in mercury had adverse impact on apple crop as it has turned yellowish in colour and only a good rainfall can restore its original colour.”

President fruit Association Shopian, Mir Mohammad Amin, said, “The market of apples is down as compared to previous year, not only in Kashmir but outside Kashmir also. Early variety ‘Kulu Delicious’ is being sold at 700-750 rupees per box.”
