“The traffic situation in the town turns very bad during morning and evening hours and not a single traffic cop is being deployed to streamline the traffic here,” they added.

They said that movement of heavy vehicles through the main town is resulting into traffic mess. One of the local residents Owais Ahmad said, “The road alongside Jamia Masjid Shopian is fully occupied by street vendors and even pedestrians do not find it safe to walk from here when traffic gets stuck.”

“We have never seen any traffic cop here regulating the traffic,” he added.

Locals further said that wrong parking also adds to traffic jams in the main town as people park their vehicles along the roadside, footpaths which are meant for pedestrians.

“The traffic jams are mostly witnessed at circle road which remains occupied by street vendors,” they added.

Talking to Kashmir Images District Commissioner Shopian said, “We have already issued an orders aimed at restricting the movement of heavy vehicles through main town to ease the traffic movement.”

He further said that they will be clearing all the encroached sites in the next week which have been occupied by street vendors.

When asked that people are complaining that no traffic cops are deployed in the area, he said, “Traffic police remains present in the area.”
