Four militants killed in Rafiabad; encounter still on

Baramulla, Aug 08: Four militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the forests of Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Wednesday, officials said.

An Army spokesman said that four militants were killed in the ongoing gunfight. “The operation is going on,” he said.

Earlier today, a para commando of the Army was injured in the firefight that broke out after a joint team of Army’s 32 RR and 9 PARA commandos launched a cordon-and-search operation in the dense woods of upper reaches of Rafiabad.

DGP SP Vaid said that five militants were trapped in the gunfight.

“Encounter going on in Dooniwari forest area of Police Station Dangiwacha Sopore, report of presence of 5 militants. Wish success to our boys,” Director of General of Police Vaid said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, a militant and an over-ground worker (OGW) have been arrested from Pulwama and Baramulla districts, police said today.

A joint party of government forces yesterday apprehended the militant, identified as Abdul Majid Shah, from Awantipora area of Pulwama district of south Kashmir, a police official said.

He is a resident of the Iqbal Colony Pattan area of Baramulla, the official said.

The militant was travelling in a car bearing Delhi registration number and was on his way to meet his other accomplices active in the area, he said.

Some arms and ammunition and other incriminating material was seized from him, the official said.

During questioning, Shah said that he was in touch with other militants of the area “who are planning attacks “, he said.

The official said a case under Section 7/25 of the Arms Act has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Police also claimed arresting an OGW of al-Qaeda-linked Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind (AGH) from in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested an over ground worker of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind militant outfit in Sheeri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Irfan Ahmad Ganaie, son of Muhammad Ramzan Ganaie, a resident of Hajam Mohalalh, Rathsuna Tral was arrested when he was heading to Uri at Sheeri, said an official.

He said that the forces were acting on “specific information” that Ganaie was on way to Uri to undertake militant action.

“Multiple checkpoints were laid by the police and the forces in the area and the individual was apprehended carrying a live hand-grenade in Sheeri area on Baramulla-Uri road,” said the official.

“His mobile phone was also seized. Preliminary investigation into the matter reveals his affiliation with Gazwat-ul-Hind.”

He said a case FIR No 39/2018 under provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been registered in Police Station Sheeri. “Further investigation into the matter is going on,” he said.
