Srinagar/Baramulla: Taking by surprise all and sundry, the security forces carried out today a cordon and search operation in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk amid heightening of security measures following killing of a CRPF jawan at Batamaloo on Tuesday.

A joint team of security forces cordoned off the area around Ghanta Ghar and carried out searches of buildings and vehicles in the area, a police official said.

He said no arrests were made in the operation, during which movement of people through the cordoned area was suspended.

Security forces started random frisking of vehicles entering the city following imposition of governor’s rule in the state last month but the sanitisation and area domination exercises have been intensified since Tuesday when militants shot dead a CRPF jawan and injured another at Batamaloo.

Meanwhile, a cordon and search operation launched by security forces in old town area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district ended on Friday.

Sources said that SOG of J&K Police and Army’s 46 RR launched a CASO late Thursday evening and after intense searches in Kakar Hamam area, the operation ended.

However, they said the operation was re-launched Friday morning in Kakar Hamam, Ganie Hamam and other adjoining areas during which searches of houses were conducted.

Local sources said that house to house search were conducted and the operation ended with no arrests reported.
