Bodies of 3 avalanche victims recovered in Kupwara

Kupwara, Mar 01: A joint rescue team of police, army and state disaster response force today recovered bodies of three persons who came under an avalanche in Kupwara district on February 24.

“Bodies of three persons who went missing on February 24 after they were hit by an avalanche at Guchibal Behak in Kupwara district were recovered today by the joint rescue team of police, SDRF and army,” a police spokesman said.

He said the deceased were identified as Ghulam Mohammad Lone (37), son of Ali Mohammad Lone;  Mohammad Altaf Mir (25), son of Bashir Ahmad Mir, residents of Warnoo Lolab, and Bashir Ahmad Ganaie (25), son of Ghulam Rasool, resident of Dardpora, Lolab.

Meanwhile, Minister for Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation & Reconstruction, Javaid Mustafa Mir today  announced ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 lakhs each in favour of the next of kin of the three victims.

An official press release said the ex- gratia relief was provided to the families of the victims under State Disaster Response Fund(SDRF).

Mir also appreciated the rescue teams and the local volunteers for successfully accomplishing the challenging task of search operation despite harsh terrain and inclement weather, and expressed condolences with the bereaved families and directed health department to provide best medical facilities to the two survivors.

The Minister also asked Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and District Disaster Management authorities to take note why such incident occurred when avalanche warning was already issued. He stressed on preemptive measures to prevent such incidents in future.

 

Avalanche claims life in Bandipora

Srinagar, Mar 01: A 25-years-old man died and another was injured in an avalanche in Bandipora district of north Kashmir while bodies of three persons buried under an avalanche last month were also recovered today, police said.

An avalanche yesterday struck Hassangam-Malangam area in Tulail area of Bandipora district, resulting in injuries to two persons, a police official said.

The injured persons were shifted to Sub-district hospital at Tulail where one of them succumbed, the official said.

He said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Aziz Beigh,  while the injured person has been identified as Haleem Beigh (23).
