SRINAGAR, JULY 29: Director Horticulture, Ajaz Ahamd Bhat today said that the focus of horticulture department should be on small and marginal farmers for their upliftment.

Bhat made these remarks while chairing a review meeting of various departmental activities and different horticulture related schemes.

During the meeting, Director took a comprehensive review of horticulture and allied activities being undertaken for increase in quality production of fruit, its distribution and marketing.

Director Horticulture also reviewed the status, production and distribution of fruit from Harwan, Zawoora and Zakura nurseries under the horticulture department.

It was given out that 6,068 families in Srinagar are dependent on horticulture and the department plans to develop urban gardens within municipal limits of Srinagar city, which intends to cover more than 4000 families.

Meeting was informed that the department plans to give support in establishment of storage, processing and preservation units besides providing assistance in refrigerated transport vehicles.

Joint Director Horticulture, Assistant Director Horticulture and chief horticulture officers from Srinagar and other districts of central Kashmir attended the meeting.
