During the camp, it was given out that the aim of the programme was to sensitise the driver community about safe and disciplined driving. It was enjoined upon the drivers to follow some golden rules of safe driving which include using a seat belt, not to over-speed, keeping your vehicle fit, avoid using a phone while driving and be sober on road.

Speaking on the occasion, SDM Tangmarg Shabir Ahmad Bhat said that the need of the hour is to impart awareness about registration, fitness of vehicles and procedures for obtaining driving license among car owners and drivers of commercial vehicles. He further said that the majority of the vehicles do not follow the road safety norms. He urged the transport department to conduct such awareness programmes on regular basis and give the drivers basic training regarding safe driving. He further directed the officials of the transport department that a booklet should be printed over the road safety measures and the same should be circulated among the stakeholders to sensitise them regarding the issue.

Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Regional Transport Officer Baramulla Dr Mohammad Zubair Lattoo pointed out, “Ensuring road safety is a key priority for the government as India witnesses around 5 lakh accidents and 1.5 lakh deaths every year. He said that in order to make our roads safer, there has to be a collaborative and multi-pronged initiative that needs joint action from the administration, civic authorities, automobile industry, civil society and commuters in general. Sensitizing the public about their roles in ensuring road safety is as vital as the placement of curbs, underpasses and safety features for pedestrians.

Later on, medical eye check-up was conducted for the commercial vehicle drivers.
