Sarpanchs administered oath at Anantnag, Kupwara

ANANTNAG, JANUARY 14: The newly elected sarpanchs of the District Anantnag today took oath of office here at a function organized by Rural Development Department and Panchayat Raj.

The District Development Commissioner, Mohammad Younis Malik congratulated the newly elected Sarpanchs of District.

In his address, the DDC made the Sarpanchs aware about their duties as guaranteed in the Panchayat Raj Act. He said that the aim of the Panchayat Raj is to transfer power at village level so that problems faced by the villagers can be redressed at the grass root level. He also said that the Sarpanchs should know about government schemes and programmes so that they can deliver the benefits to people in a meaningful way.

The DDC also highlighted various rules and regulations of Panchayat Raj Acts from 1941, 1951, 1958 & 1989. He said that in 1989 under Panchayat Raj Act three tyre systems was introduced on the village level, Block level & District Level which has empowered the Panchayat institutions. He also informed the Sarpanchs that 18 departments have been included under Panchayat Raj  and the officers of the said departments have to consult Sarpanchs and Panchs in preparation of schemes and programmes.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Sarpanchs took oath here at swearing-in-ceremonies held across Kupwara district.

Around 362 elected representatives were administered the oath of Office.

The oath to the Sarpanchs of Kupwara and Handwara were   administered by the concerned ADCs, while at Karnah and Sogam the oath was administered by the respective SDMs.

At Kupwara, District Development Commissioner, Khalid Jahangir presided over the function. He congratulated the Sarpanchs on being elected as representatives of their respective Panchayats. He observed that the Panchayati Raj Institutions can truly represent and meet the developmental aspirations of people with the direct participation of people in planning   and implementation of Government welfare schemes.
