Sopore, Dec 20: With the number of vehicles hitting the road increasing every day, the traffic jams are becoming a norm in north Kashmir’s Sopore Town.

The mismanagement of the traffic and callous approach of drivers and commuters has left the town in a mess. Interestingly, Sopore is the only town in valley where you will not see any traffic cop being deployed to manage traffic.

According to the locals, top officials of traffic department and local administration have assured the public several times about solving the traffic issue in the Town but the promise is yet to be fulfilled.

“I have never seen a traffic cop in Sopore Town. The places including Main Chowk, Iqbal Market and General Bus Stand area remain crowded with vehicles and public alike where traffic regulation is very important,” said a local resident, Ali Mohammad Dar.

“I travel to Sopore on daily basis and I have to get stuck in traffic for more than half an hour every day. Nobody bothers to check the traffic violations being committed by the public transporter operators,” said a government employee, Mohammad Ashraf Dar.

In order to ensure hassle free traffic movement, Municipal Council (MC) Sopore had deployed forty of its employees at many places including Main Chowk, Iqbal Market and General Bus Stand but the employees disappeared from the roads after a few days of executing the task.

Executive Officer Municipal Council Sopore, Anis Ahmad Chowdhary, told Kashmir Images that twenty eight employees of MC Sopore have been deployed across the town for regulating traffic. “We have received directions from higher-ups to deploy employees of our department for handling traffic management in the Town,” he said.

SSP Rural Traffic department, Muzaffar Ahmed, told Kashmir Images that traffic mismanagement issue in Sopore Town will be resolved soon.
