Budgam, Nov 13: Congress leader from Budgam, Hakeem Rohullah Gazi, was elected as president Municipal Committee Budgam (MCB) after defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate by a single vote on Tuesday.
Gazi, who had won unopposed from two wards, got five votes against four of BJP candidate, Shahnaza Hussain.
The post of vice-president was also won by Congress candidate, Mehraj-ud-din Dar.
Dar, who was elected uncontested from Khanpora ward bagged six votes out of nine and defeated BJP rival, Samiullah Bhat who only got three votes.
Even a BJP councillor voted for Dar as Congress had five councillors only, but the party got six votes. The BJP had four councillors.
There were speculations that a Congress councillor might vote for BJP candidates but at the eleventh hours he decided to support his party.
Sources said that he was not allowed to contest for the post of vice-president, but timely efforts of Gazi returned disgruntled councilor in the party.
While taking to Kashmir Images after his win, newly elected president said that he would discharge his duties properly and work for the people.
It is pertinent to mention that MCB has 13 wards among those only a single ward went for polls last month, while 10 candidates won unopposed, among them, Congress leader won from two wards. He later resigned from one ward. Three wards did not find any contestant.
