Srinagar: Violent protests broke out in Sopore area on Friday following the killing of the local militant in Handwara last night.

Forces fired tear gas at the mourners who were marching with the body of killed militant Naseer Teli in Arampora, triggering intense clashes, said locals.

Teli was buried at the martyrs’ graveyard in Chinkipora amid pro-freedom slogans. Thousands of people attended his last rites, said a witness.

Teli was killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said Friday.

Security forces launched an operation based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in Pohrupeth in Handwara area Thursday evening,  a police official said.

He said during the search operation, the militant fired on the search party, which was retaliated by security forces.

“In the ensuing encounter which ended late Thursday night, one militant was killed,” he added.

Sources identified the killed militant Naseer Teli from Arampora, Sopore.

Al-Badr militant held in Kupwara

Srinagar: Security forces Friday arrested a militant belonging to Al-Badr outfit from Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Acting on an intelligence input, security forces set up a checkpoint at Chutipora crossing in the Handwara area of Kupwara in the afternoon, a police spokesman said.

He said during checking, the security forces apprehended one suspect and recovered arms and ammunition from his possession.

He was identified as Sajad Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Hamid Dar resident of Rohumu Pulwama.

Sajjad had been missing from his home since October 03, 2018 and a report to the effect had been lodged in Police Station Rajpora, District Pulwama, police said, adding, he had recently joined the Al Badr.

“A case has been registered in this regard at Police Station Handwara and the investigation has been set in motion,” said the spokesman.

a resident of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, the spokesman said. Dar was reported missing on October 3 from his home, he added.

“He had recently joined the Al-Badr militant organisation,” the spokesman said.
