In Sopore, street lights remain ON during day time

Sopore, Oct 29: When unscheduled power cuts are the order of the day, the street lights, installed by Sopore Muncipal Council (SMC), can be seen burning during daytime in north Kashmir’s Sopore town.

Locals said that due to apathy of SMC and Power Development Department (PDP), the street lights continue to remain “ON” during the day time from last many months.

They said that the street lights remain lit during day time in different parts of the town including Super Market, Main Chowk, Iqbal Market and near Amargrah Sopore road.

“We have brought the issue in the notice of SMC and PDD officials several times but they have not taken any steps to fix the street lights,” Mohammad Ashraf Ganaie, Former President Traders Federation Sopore told Kashmir Images.

PDD officials refused to comment over the issue and said that we have nothing to do with the functioning of street lights and our job is to just ensure electricity supply to these street lights.

When contacted Executive Officer, SMC, he said: “Yes it is true that street lights remain “ON” during day time. The timers of these street lights have got damaged which is causing such an issue and we have repaired most of the lights from last one year. We have even installed 130 LED bulbs on the electric poles to fight darkness in the streets of the town.”

“I have also brought the issue in the notice of the higher-ups asking them to release adequate funds so that damaged parts of the street lights can be purchased,” the officer added.
