Shopian, October 27: Residents of Narwani village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district said that they are relying on polluted and unhygienic water for drinking and other purposes since last ten years.

Locals here said that in absence of filtered tap water supply, they are being compelled to consume and use impure water of Nallah Tongri.

They said that the Narwani village was supposed to get water supply under Nadigam Narwani water supply scheme but due to the lackadaisical approach of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department water pipes were not installed in their village and instead the water pipes are connected to a Nallah which is in dire straits.

“From last 10 years, we are relying on the contaminated water of a filthy Nallah which flows through DK Pora village of the Shopian district,” they added.

One of the residents of the village, Manzoor Ahmad Malik, said: “Despite apprising the PHE department about the issue time and again, the authorities have never visited our village for mitigating our sufferings.”

“We have no other alternative for drinking water facility in our village, although there is a tube well in our village but it remains defunct most of the time and thereby leaving the villagers with no option but to rely on contaminated water of the Nallah Tongri,” he added.

When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Shopian, Nissar Ahmad Shah, he said: “The village will get water supply under DK Pora water supply scheme which has been approved and the work on the same will start once funds are released.”

“Till then, we will provide them water supply through some other alternate means,” he added.
