Kupwara: General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army’s 28 Infantry Division, Major General Rakesh Nair, on Sunday said Karnah had the potential to emerge as a major destination for border tourism, cultural exchange and economic development.
Addressing the Karnah Youth Festival 2026 at Tithwal, organised by the Army in collaboration with the Kupwara district administration, Nair said peace and development were closely linked, with stability creating opportunities in education, business and tourism.
“Where peace prevails, education flourishes, businesses grow, tourism opens new doors and prosperity finds its way,” he said.
Held under the theme ‘Jashn-e-Karnah: Rang, Riwaayat aur Riwaaj’, the festival sought to showcase the region’s cultural heritage, traditions and natural beauty.
Nair said efforts were being made to bring Karnah’s landscape, educational institutions, cultural traditions and local way of life to wider public attention.
He said the region could gain recognition for its scenic valleys, rich cultural heritage and potential for border tourism.
The festival witnessed participation from residents of different villages, including women, children, youth and elderly people. Stalls showcasing local art, traditional practices, gardening, livestock rearing and government welfare schemes were among the attractions.
A medical camp was also organised, with doctors providing healthcare services to residents, while local youth participated in a blood donation drive.
Girls took part in athletics and cricket competitions, while young men participated in various sporting activities aimed at promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
Traditional folk songs, dances and cultural performances highlighted Karnah’s customs and heritage. Winners of various competitions were felicitated, while local artists were recognised for their performances.
The event concluded with a focus on youth empowerment, community participation and cooperation between the Army and local residents.
