SRINAGAR: Apni Party Senior Vice President and former Cabinet Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir on Friday demanded the immediate release of pending monthly pensions for elderly people, widows and persons with disabilities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mir said reports from the ground suggested that beneficiaries belonging to these vulnerable groups had not received their pensions for several months.
In a statement, he said the ruling party had promised to increase the monthly pension for these categories from the existing Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000, but alleged that beneficiaries were now being deprived even of the amount they were currently entitled to receive.
He said delays in payments to disadvantaged sections of society had not received adequate attention, alleging that the government was showing disregard for its responsibility towards them.
Mir urged the government to clear all pending pension payments without further delay and fulfil its commitments towards elderly people, widows and persons with disabilities.
