SRINAGAR: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar Singh has directed all police stations across the Kashmir Valley to adopt SMART Policing and Digital Beat Policing as part of their routine functioning to improve public service delivery and strengthen accountability.
Singh issued the directions while chairing a conference attended by Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) of ranges, district Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Additional SSPs, zonal SSPs, Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs).
The initiative follows the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police and aims to make police stations more accessible, responsive and technology-enabled.
Emphasising the principles of SMART Policing, Singh called for a policing approach that is strict yet sensitive, modern and mobile, alert and accountable, reliable and responsive, and technology-savvy and professionally trained.
He said these principles should be reflected in the day-to-day functioning of police stations rather than remain confined to policy documents.
Under Digital Beat Policing, SHOs have been directed to ensure regular field visits by beat officers, meaningful interaction with residents and prompt attention to public grievances.
The initiative also envisages maintaining updated digital records at the beat level, improving access to police services through technology and clearly defining the responsibilities of beat officers. SHOs and supervisory officers will monitor implementation and assess progress.
Singh stressed that police stations serve as the primary point of contact between the police and the public and must ensure timely, transparent and accessible services.
He directed district police heads and supervisory officers to oversee the implementation of the initiatives and ensure measurable improvements in public outreach, community participation and service delivery across the Kashmir Zone.
