Baramulla, October 9: Baramulla defeated Doda 7-0 in the opening match of the Union Territory-level Under-17 Boys Inter-District Football Championship, which began at St. Joseph’s School Ground in Baramulla on Friday.
The tournament features 344 young footballers representing 19 districts of Jammu and Kashmir and is being organised by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), J&K, under the supervision of Director General Anuradha Gupta. The District Youth Services and Sports Department, Baramulla, is hosting the championship.
Pranjal Hazarika, Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC), Baramulla, inaugurated the competition in the presence of the second-in-command of the Border Security Force’s 112 Battalion in Baramulla and Suresh Brittoo, principal of St. Joseph’s School.
Hazarika encouraged the players to maintain discipline and sportsmanship, while appreciating the department’s efforts to promote sports at the grassroots level.
Mushtaq Ahmad Pampori, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Baramulla, said the department was committed to providing young athletes with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities through competitive events.
Brittoo welcomed the participating teams and highlighted the role of sports in developing leadership, teamwork and character among students.
The championship will be played on a league basis across five venues.
