Srinagar: After a prolonged dry spell and unusually warm daytime temperatures, weather conditions are expected to change across Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday, with the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecasting thunderstorms and gusty winds at some places and the possibility of rain, while higher reaches may receive light snowfall.
According to the latest forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, weather is expected to remain generally dry on Monday, Oct 5, before partly to generally cloudy conditions develop from Oct 6. Light rain and light snowfall over higher reaches are likely at a few places during the initial phase of the change.
The latest IMD warning indicates the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and squall on Oct 6, followed by further thunderstorm and lightning activity on Oct 8 and from Oct 9 to 11. No warning has been issued for Oct 5.
The weather shift comes after temperatures remained above normal at several places. According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Srinagar recorded a maximum of 31.2°C on Oct 4, while Qazigund recorded 31.4°C and Kokernag 29.4°C. Pahalgam recorded 25.8°C and Gulmarg 23.2°C.
The Meteorological Centre has also indicated a more significant spell of rain and snowfall around Oct 8 to 11 under the influence of a Western Disturbance, with the possibility of snowfall becoming more pronounced over higher elevations. [KNT]
