Srinagar: Five people were killed, and six others were injured after an SUV plunged into the Kishanganga River in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday, officials said.
The accident took place on Seemari road in Teetwal area of the north Kashmir district. A rescue operation was launched immediately, they said.
People who sustained injuries when the passenger vehicle fell into the river have been rushed to a nearby hospital.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the loss of lives.
“Deeply pained by the loss of lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kupwara. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured. I have directed the district administration to ensure best possible treatment to the injured,” Sinha said in a post on X.
“The chief minister expressed deep grief over the tragic road accident in Karnah-Tangdhar, Kupwara, in which five persons lost their lives and several others were injured,” the CM’s office said in a post on X.
Conveying his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the chief minister directed the administration and medical authorities to extend the best possible treatment to all those injured.
JK Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara also expressed shock over the accident and expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
3 killed, 14 injured in road accidents in Jammu division
Three men, including a BSF trooper, were killed and 14 others injured in separate road accidents in Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri and Kishtwar districts on Monday, officials said.
Raj Kumar and Gablesh Kumar, both residents of Bani, were killed when their car skidded off a hilly road and plunged into a gorge near Satasar along the Bani-Basholi road in Kathua district on Monday afternoon, the officials said.
Rescuers recovered the bodies from the mangled wreckage of the car after the accident, they said.
BSF trooper Ved Paul Singh, a resident of Ratnal village, lost his life after falling from a tractor near his house in the Bishnah area of Jammu, the officials said.
Singh, who was on leave, was scheduled to retire next month, they said.
In Rajouri, eight passengers, including two women, were injured after a mini-bus overturned near the Kainchi Morh, the officials said.
They said the vehicle was travelling from Kotranka Kandi towards Rajouri when it overturned, adding that the injured were undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
In another incident, six persons were injured when a vehicle turned turtle at Drubeel in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district, the officials said.
