Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, ministers and legislators on Tuesday participated in a Swachhata Signature and Pledge campaign at the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly complex as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign.
The event saw members of the House sign the cleanliness pledge and reaffirm their commitment to promoting sanitation, cleanliness and public participation in waste management initiatives.
The campaign forms part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 programme being observed from September 17 to October 2 under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.” The initiative focuses on public participation, cleanliness of public spaces, youth engagement, sanitation workers’ welfare, source segregation of waste and waste-to-wealth activities.
Officials said the participation of elected representatives at the Assembly was aimed at reinforcing the message that cleanliness requires collective responsibility and sustained community involvement. Legislators were also encouraged to carry the message of sanitation and responsible waste management to their respective constituencies.
The UT-wide campaign is being coordinated by the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, which formally launched the programme at Khonmoh in Srinagar on September 17.
Director General Rural Sanitation Anoo Malhotra had stressed at the launch that cleanliness should become a continuous public habit rather than remain a time-bound campaign.
The Assembly event highlighted the campaign’s focus on public participation, behavioural change and community-led sanitation efforts. Activities under SHS 2026 will continue across Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days, focusing on cleanliness drives, citizen engagement, waste management and sanitation awareness programmes.
