SRINAGAR: The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Srinagar, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), on Wednesday organised a media interaction programme to highlight the Government of India’s Vision Document 2026-29 aimed at achieving a “Drug-Free India” by 2029.
The programme, titled Vartalap, focused on creating awareness about the anti-drug strategy unveiled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in June this year and discussed measures being adopted to tackle drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Addressing the session, officials said the three-year roadmap envisages a coordinated approach to reducing drug supply, curbing demand and strengthening rehabilitation efforts. The strategy is built around four pillars—intelligence and operations-based enforcement, control of precursor chemicals and synthetic drugs, demand and harm reduction, and capacity building and coordination.
The interaction was led by NCB Zonal Director for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Piyush Kumar Ankit, PIB Director Srinagar Qazi Salman and Assistant Director (Media), Ministry of Home Affairs, Rajeev Kumar Rustagi.
Officials briefed media representatives on recent anti-narcotics efforts across the country, including drug seizures, arrests, investigations and destruction of seized narcotics.
According to the presentation, the roadmap calls for identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks, targeting illicit financing channels, tackling darknet-enabled trafficking and destroying illegal drug manufacturing facilities and cultivation sites.
The document also envisages greater involvement of educational institutions, youth organisations and government departments in awareness campaigns and prevention initiatives. Programmes through the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and My Bharat platform are proposed to promote anti-drug awareness among young people.
Officials said the Vision Document was prepared following consultations with central ministries, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders and aims to strengthen coordination among agencies involved in combating drug trafficking and substance abuse.
The programme also emphasised the role of media in creating public awareness and encouraging community participation in anti-drug initiatives, officials said.
