GANDERBAL: Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Jatin Kishore on Wednesday directed departments to intensify enforcement, surveillance and awareness measures to curb drug abuse and drug trafficking in the district.
Chairing the monthly meeting of the District Level Narco Coordination (NCORD) Committee, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed the steps being taken by various departments to strengthen enforcement, prevention, awareness and rehabilitation efforts.
He stressed the need for greater inter-departmental coordination and a sustained approach to tackle drug abuse. The Assistant Controller Drugs was directed to intensify inspections and work closely with the Police Department to act against drug peddling, illegal sale and distribution of drugs, and violations by drug sellers.
Kishore also directed the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) to expedite cancellation of driving licences, as per rules, in cases involving individuals found engaged in drug peddling.
The Deputy Commissioner called for stronger prosecution of drug-related cases and strict action against those involved in drug trafficking or facilitating the illegal distribution of narcotics. He emphasised the need for targeted measures to discourage drug use, particularly among youth.
He directed departments to strengthen surveillance of courier services and other channels vulnerable to the transportation of narcotics in coordination with the police. Installation of CCTV cameras at identified vulnerable locations was also ordered to improve monitoring and deterrence.
Reviewing preventive measures, the Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to identify and destroy wild cannabis plants at the block and panchayat levels through regular field monitoring.
He also stressed the need to intensify awareness campaigns in educational institutions and communities, focusing on the harmful effects of drug abuse, prevention, counselling and rehabilitation. Departments were asked to conduct regular awareness programmes and submit Action Taken Reports (ATRs) on directions issued during the meeting.
Kishore said tackling drug abuse requires coordinated efforts by enforcement agencies, health institutions, educational bodies, local administration and community stakeholders, and reiterated the district administration’s commitment to sustained action against the drug menace.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kangan, Deputy Director Prosecution, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer and other district officers.
