Jammu: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Monday stressed the need for effective implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and greater awareness among eligible beneficiaries about their rights under the legislation.
He was speaking at a seminar on “Implementation of Forest Rights Act and the Way Forward” organised by the Gujjar Bakarwal Students Alliance (GBSA) at the University of Jammu as part of the organisation’s third Foundation Day celebrations.
Addressing students, tribal community members and other stakeholders, Rana said the Act is aimed at recognising the rights and entitlements of forest-dwelling tribal communities and other traditional forest dwellers.
The minister emphasised the importance of awareness, participation and community engagement in ensuring that eligible beneficiaries are able to access the rights and benefits provided under the law. He also called for focused efforts to improve access to education, livelihood opportunities and government welfare schemes for tribal communities.
Rana stressed the need for coordination among government departments, grassroots institutions and community representatives to address implementation challenges and achieve the objectives of the Act.
The seminar featured discussions on various aspects of the Forest Rights Act, including awareness, recognition of forest rights, institutional mechanisms and community participation.
The event was attended by representatives of the Gujjar Bakarwal Students Alliance, students, members of tribal communities, social activists and other stakeholders. The organisation also expressed appreciation for measures taken by the government regarding implementation of the Forest Rights Act and protection of the rights of forest-dwelling communities.
