Jammu: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment and Tribal Affairs Javed Ahmed Rana on Friday reviewed the functioning of the Wildlife Department and the progress of ongoing and sanctioned development projects across Jammu and Kashmir.
At a review meeting, the minister assessed projects being executed under the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) programme in the Pir Panjal and Chenab regions, including plantation, conservation and infrastructure works. He directed officials to ensure timely completion of all sanctioned projects while maintaining quality and sustainability standards.
Rana also reviewed infrastructure development at Jambu Zoo, including new and upgraded animal enclosures, specialised habitats and facilities for rescued wildlife. He stressed that all works should prioritise animal welfare, scientific management and conservation objectives.
The meeting discussed plans for walk-through aviaries, a butterfly park and landscaped green spaces under the zoo’s master plan. The minister directed officials to develop these facilities in a manner that promotes conservation as well as public engagement.
Reviewing visitor facilities, Rana assessed arrangements such as walking tracks and battery-operated vehicles. He asked officers to explore measures to increase visitor footfall and improve the zoo’s appeal for families, students and tourists.
The minister also called for exploring Smart City bus connectivity to Jambu Zoo to improve public transport access.
On human-wildlife conflict, Rana directed the department to adopt scientific and preventive measures, including the use of safe, non-lethal deterrents to prevent wild animals from entering residential areas.
He also asked officials to identify vulnerable locations, strengthen rapid-response teams and train local communities in safe response measures. The minister said protection of human lives and wildlife conservation should go hand in hand through community participation and preventive strategies.
