JAMMU: Police arrested a man and recovered 2.548 kg of suspected ‘ganja’ (marijuana) from his possession in the Bahu Fort area of Jammu city on Thursday, officials said.

The accused, identified as Mintu, was apprehended by a police team during an operation in the area, following which the suspected contraband was recovered from his possession, they said.

A case has been registered at Bahu Fort police station under relevant provisions of law, officials said.

Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the contraband, trace its forward linkages and identify other persons involved in the illicit drug trade, they said.

Separately, a suspected drug peddler was arrested along with 438 grams of heroin in a joint operation with Border Security Force (BSF) in a “high-risk” operation here, an official of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said, adding that an armed person escaped from the scene taking advantage of the darkness.

A spokesman of the ACB said a team of officers came under armed threat during a “high-risk” narcotics operation near lower Ragoora area along the banks and natural floodplains of the Tawi River in Jammu on Wednesday.

The officers secured 438 grams of suspected heroin from the possession of one accused, a resident of Kathua, who was apprehended at the spot, he said.

“The terrain itself posed a serious challenge as the officers had to navigate wetland and tall dense grass along the Tawi riverbed to close in on the suspects. As the team moved to make the seizure, an associate of the accused brandished a weapon, putting the officers in grave and immediate danger,” the spokesman said.

He said an officer fired two warning shots into the air to defuse the threat. No one was injured in the incident, though the armed associate managed to flee the scene despite the team’s efforts to apprehend him.

Further investigation to unravel the entire forward and backward linkages is underway, the spokesman said.
