New Delhi: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Sunday reviewed the implementation roadmap of the Ujh Multipurpose Project (MPP) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district and directed officials to expedite work so that the project benefits reach people at the earliest.
During a meeting with officials of WAPCOS Ltd., the Government of India undertaking implementing the project, the minister was informed that the project would be executed in phases, with work commencing while acquisition of the remaining land continues simultaneously.
Dr Singh asked the implementing agency to explore efficient execution strategies while maintaining quality, safety and efficiency standards. Officials also briefed him on preparations relating to the project site and other requirements.
According to the minister, the Ujh Multipurpose Project, located on the Ujh River, a tributary of the Ravi, is expected to generate between 186 MW and 212 MW of electricity. It will provide irrigation to nearly 90,000 hectares of agricultural land in Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, and Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab. The project will also supply drinking water to Kathua district and provide water for industrial use.
Dr Singh said the project, conceived decades ago, had remained pending for years before being revived. He also referred to the Shahpurkandi project, saying both projects were being taken forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to optimise the use of India’s Ravi river waters.
He said the Ujh project would strengthen agricultural productivity, improve water security and support economic development in the region. The minister also noted its strategic importance, saying it has the backing of the Ministry of Home Affairs in view of its security and border management implications.
Dr Singh stressed the need for close coordination among all stakeholders and effective monitoring to ensure timely completion of the project and assured WAPCOS of the Centre’s support during its implementation.
