SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated discussions with coaching institutes in the city to develop a scholarship-based programme for meritorious children of sanitation workers.
Commissioner SMC Faz Lul Haseeb chaired a meeting with representatives of coaching institutions and urged them to partner with the civic body in providing educational opportunities to children of sanitation workers.
Under the proposed initiative, coaching institutes would voluntarily reserve a limited number of seats for deserving students and provide scholarships, study material, test series, mentoring and career guidance.
The Commissioner said the initiative was part of the Corporation’s efforts to strengthen the welfare of its sanitation workforce by promoting education as a means of long-term empowerment.
He said sanitation workers make a significant contribution to maintaining cleanliness and public health in Srinagar, and supporting their children’s education was a meaningful way to recognise their service.
According to the SMC, a transparent mechanism will be developed to identify eligible students on the basis of merit and other objective criteria before facilitating their admission to participating coaching institutes.
The Corporation said the modalities of the programme would be finalised in consultation with coaching institutions with the aim of establishing a sustainable partnership to support the educational advancement of sanitation workers’ children.
