Kargil/Jammu: A boy drowned in a deep-water pit near Iqbal Bridge in the Kargil district of Ladakh union territory on Thursday, officials said.
The incident occurred when the boy accidentally slipped into the deep-water pit near the bridge, they said. Local residents immediately alerted the authorities, following which a rescue operation was launched.
Personnel from the Kargil police, the Union Territory Disaster Response Force (UTDRF), and volunteers of the Basij Imam Youth Organisation rushed to the spot and carried out a coordinated search operation, they said.
After strenuous efforts, the rescue teams recovered the boy’s body from the water pit. He was shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the officials said.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated proceedings to ascertain the circumstances leading to the drowning.
The identity of the deceased was not immediately disclosed. (PTI)
