SRINAGAR: Police have registered a case against individuals allegedly involved in creating and circulating provocative social media content that could hurt religious sentiments and promote enmity between communities in central Kashmir’s Budgam district ahead of Muharram.
According to a police spokesperson, an FIR has been registered at Budgam Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against persons accused of creating and sharing content on social media that has the potential to outrage religious feelings and foster hatred between religious groups.
The action comes in view of the forthcoming holy month of Muharram, during which authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance to preserve communal harmony and public order.
Police said the case was registered following credible inputs regarding the circulation of provocative videos and misinformation on social media platforms. An investigation has been launched to identify all those involved and take appropriate legal action in accordance with the law.
The police also appealed to the public to exercise caution while using social media and refrain from creating, sharing or forwarding content that may incite hatred, hurt religious sentiments or disturb peace.
“Any person found involved in such activities shall be dealt with strictly as per law,” the spokesperson said.
