SRINAGAR: In a sustained effort to strengthen grassroots agricultural extension and promote sustainable farming practices, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Srinagar under Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) intensified its village-level outreach under the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan, taking scientific advisories, soil health awareness and institutional support mechanisms directly to farmers’ doorsteps.
The outreach programme was conducted in the villages of Malikpora, Sheikhpora, Khanpora and Patipora in the Panzinara-B block of Qamarwari and witnessed active participation from farmers, agricultural experts, officials from Grameen Bank and representatives of the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).
The programme reflected a collaborative effort aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices and improving farmers’ access to institutional support systems.
During the programme, Head, KVK Srinagar, Dr. Shamim A. Simnani, highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices to restore soil health and ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.
He observed that excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides over the years has adversely affected soil fertility and disturbed ecological balance, underscoring the need for greater awareness and adoption of environmentally responsible farming methods.
The participating farmers were also sensitized about the benefits of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme and encouraged to avail institutional credit facilities for agricultural and allied activities to enhance farm productivity and income generation.
Agricultural experts interacted with farmers and provided guidance on balanced nutrient management, soil conservation techniques and eco-friendly agricultural practices aimed at improving soil health and ensuring sustainable crop production.
The outreach programme forms part of SKUAST-K’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between scientific research and farming communities by delivering practical knowledge, technical guidance and support services directly to farmers at the grassroots level.
