Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) has extended the closure of the Gulmarg Gondola till June 8 as maintenance work and safety inspections continue following last month’s technical malfunction that left hundreds of tourists stranded mid-air.
In an advisory issued on Wednesday, the corporation said all tickets booked for visits between May 25 and June 8 would be refunded in full.
The Gondola has remained non-operational since May 25, when a technical snag disrupted services and left more than 300 tourists stranded in cabins suspended above the ground.
The incident triggered panic among passengers and led to a major rescue operation that lasted several hours before all tourists were safely evacuated.
Following the incident, authorities suspended operations and initiated a comprehensive technical review of the system. Engineers are currently inspecting critical components and carrying out repair and maintenance works to ensure operational safety.
“Due to technical maintenance, the Gondola shall remain closed. All tickets from May 25 to June 8 will be refunded in full,” the advisory stated.
Officials said services would resume only after completion of maintenance works and receipt of the necessary safety clearances, emphasizing that the decision has been taken in the interest of passenger safety. (KNO)
