Srinagar: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education Sakeena Itoo on Saturday expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by a recent hailstorm that affected orchards and agricultural lands in several parts of Kashmir, including D.H. Pora in Kulgam district.

Describing the hailstorm as a major setback for orchardists and farmers dependent on the upcoming harvest season, the Minister said the government is closely monitoring the situation.

Taking stock of the damage, Itoo established direct communication with district administrations and the Director Horticulture to obtain a detailed assessment of losses caused by the weather event.

She directed Deputy Commissioners to undertake immediate ground-level assessments and ensure that affected farmers and orchardists receive timely assistance and compensation in accordance with government norms.

The Minister instructed the district administration to conduct a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of losses, facilitate expeditious relief measures and provide all possible support to the affected farming community.

She also directed the Horticulture, Agriculture and Revenue departments to work in close coordination to accelerate the compensation process and provide technical guidance and support to farmers for crop recovery wherever feasible.

Reiterating the government’s commitment towards the welfare of farmers and orchardists, Itoo said the administration stands firmly with the affected families and will ensure that genuine losses are assessed fairly and compensated as per prescribed norms.

She further instructed Deputy Commissioners to maintain a strong field presence through officers and officials, ensure close coordination among all stakeholders and address the concerns of affected farmers on priority.
