Fencer to represent India at Senior Sabre World Cup in Egypt

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on Wednesday congratulated ace sabre fencer Vishal Thappar on his selection to represent India at the Senior Fencing Sabre World Cup scheduled to be held in Cairo, Egypt from May 22 to 24.

Vishal secured his place in the Indian team following an impressive performance during the three-phase selection trials organised by the Fencing Association of India at the National Centre of Excellence, NSNIS Patiala.

Officials said his performance during the trials highlighted his technique, agility and fitness, reaffirming his position among the country’s top sabre fencers.

Vishal Thappar has represented Jammu and Kashmir and India at several national and international events and has won multiple medals, including a Senior Commonwealth gold medal.

He is currently ranked third in India in the sabre category.

Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Nuzhat Gul congratulated Vishal on his achievement and extended best wishes to him and his family.

“The selection of Vishal Thappar for the prestigious Senior Sabre World Cup is a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir. His dedication, consistency and achievements continue to inspire young athletes across the region,” she said.

The Indian contingent for the event has been cleared by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with full financial support from the Sports Authority of India.
