Jammu: PDP leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday visited the family of a youth who went missing after reportedly jumping into a stream when he was allegedly chased and attacked by cow vigilantes in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on April 12.

Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrested four accused in connection with the case, which triggered widespread protests and tension in the district.

The 25-year-old Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Mundkhal Pogal in Ukhral tehsil, was travelling from Jammu towards his native village in a pickup truck, ferrying a milch cow and two calves when he allegedly came under attack, locals claimed.

According to eyewitness accounts, Chopan jumped into the nearby Nallah Bishlari while attempting to escape the attackers.

Iltija, daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, visited the family of Chopan and called for a thorough probe into the incident, demanding strict action and the arrest of all those involved.

The PDP leader said the incident raised serious concern and needs to be probed thoroughly. She said efforts should also be intensified to look for Chopan.
