Jammu: Traffic Police in Jammu and Kashmir have launched an intensified enforcement drive against the illegal use of pressure horns and other unauthorised sound devices in vehicles across the Union Territory.
According to an official handout, the drive has been initiated at the direction of the Inspector General of Traffic Police, J&K.
Traffic Police said the Supreme Court, in its order dated December 10, 2013, had banned the use of all types of pressure horns.
Officials said the use of such horns is an offence under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and may attract a fine of up to Rs 10,000 and imprisonment of up to six months.
The department said that despite the ban, pressure horns, air horns, multi-toned horns, hooters, trumpets and other non-compliant sound devices continue to be used in vehicles, causing noise pollution and inconvenience to the public.
Motorists have been advised not to use pressure horns or any unauthorised sound-producing devices and to remove such equipment from their vehicles immediately.
The Traffic Police also directed motorists to comply with Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
Officials said that checking drives have been intensified across the Union Territory and that strict legal action will be taken against violators.
The enforcement drive will focus particularly on highways, traffic congestion points and urban areas.
The public has also been requested to report violations to the nearest Traffic Control Unit.
