Srinagar: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has urged consumers to carefully read food labels before purchasing packaged food items, saying the information printed on product packaging helps people understand what they are consuming.
The food safety regulator issued the advisory as part of its Eat Right India awareness campaign aimed at encouraging healthier food choices among consumers.
Officials said that labels on packaged foods contain important details directly related to consumer health and safety.
According to the advisory, food labels provide information about ingredients used in the product, manufacturing and expiry dates, and possible allergens.
The regulator said consumers should also check the presence of substances such as sugar, salt and preservatives, which may affect dietary choices.
Food labels also help people identify allergens including gluten and nuts, which may trigger health reactions among individuals with specific sensitivities.
The authority said checking the nutrition facts panel can help consumers understand calorie content, fat levels and other nutritional values present in packaged foods.
Officials added that taking a moment to read the information printed on the back of food packets can help people make informed decisions about their diet.
The advisory forms part of the broader Eat Right India initiative launched by the food safety regulator to promote safe, healthy and sustainable food practices across the country. (KNT)
