Gulmarg: The sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games began at the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg on Monday, with more than 400 athletes from 30 states and Union Territories taking part in the four-day event.

The snow disciplines are being conducted in Gulmarg and include ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, Nordic (cross-country) skiing and snowboarding. Officials said alpine skiing has recorded the highest number of registrations.

Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul expressed confidence about the smooth conduct of the Games, citing favourable weather and adequate snow cover.

“Over 400 participants from 30 states and UTs have registered. With good snow this season, we are hopeful the event will be successful,” she told Kashmir Images.

The first leg of the Games had earlier been held in Leh, Ladakh, from January 20 to 26. All six editions of the Khelo India Winter Games since their inception have been hosted in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The mascot for this year’s edition is the snow leopard.

Security arrangements

Officials said elaborate security arrangements have been put in place for the event. Personnel from J&K Police, CRPF and other agencies have been deployed to ensure a safe and peaceful conduct of the Games.

Participants expressed enthusiasm about competing in Kashmir’s winter conditions. Anjana, an athlete from Pune, said participation was a long-cherished dream, while Vinay from Bengaluru described Gulmarg as a “paradise”.

Vikram, a snowboarder from Auli in Uttarakhand, said the atmosphere was inspiring for athletes, and Priya, an athlete from Chennai experiencing snowfall for the first time, called it a “life-changing experience,” adding that the Games allowed her to ski in Gulmarg’s snow after months of training in warmer conditions.
