Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir on Monday organised a Cooperative Convention at its headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, bringing together representatives of various cooperative societies from across the Jammu region.

The convention was addressed by J&K BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma and party General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul.

Several party leaders and members of the cooperative fraternity, including Sanjita Dogra, Ved Sharma, Ankush Gupta and HS Pammi, were present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Sat Sharma expressed concern over the functioning of cooperative societies in the Union Territory. He said that out of 10,646 registered cooperative societies, only about 6,000 were functional and many among them were not operating consistently.

He said the cooperative sector should become an engine of economic empowerment and not remain confined to formalities. Sharma added that under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the cooperative movement has been accorded national priority.

He said issues raised during the convention would be taken up with the Union government and highlighted in Parliament to ensure structural reforms and accountability. The BJP, he said, was committed to extending the cooperative movement to every village of Jammu and Kashmir to promote self-reliance and grassroots prosperity.

Ashok Koul, while speaking on the occasion, stressed the role of cooperatives in securing geo-tagging for several products from Jammu and Kashmir and in strengthening the socio-economic conditions of skilled and unskilled workers. He emphasised awareness, training and financial support as key pillars for strengthening the cooperative ecosystem.

Ved Sharma presented the outline of the programme, HS Pammi conducted the proceedings and Ankush Gupta presented the vote of thanks.
