Handicrafts Deptt organizes orientation workshop on papier-mâché

SRINAGAR, JULY 24: Department of Handicrafts organized an orientation workshop on papier-mâché craft here at Kashmir Haat Exhibition Ground today.

The workshop was part of a series of activities aimed at achieving end-to-end cluster development for papier-mâché, crewel, chain stitch and willow wicker clusters at Zadibal, Noorbagh and Ganderbal respectively.

The participants discussed the operations of the papier-mâché trade in detail bringing out the issues and challenges faced by the artisan community. The artisans were made aware of the various opportunities existing in the markets and ways of achieving stronger market linkages.

The workshop was organized as part of the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project, funded by the World Bank, which among other things, aims to achieve recovery in Handicrafts Sector and create employment and sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans, especially for unemployed youth, women and other marginalized sections.

Members of the visiting team from Sarba Shakti Ayog also discussed various issues related to the craft and its development with Director Handicrafts.

Assistant Director Handicrafts, Srinagar, Chief Designer, School of Design and Member, Project Implementation Unit, JTFRP (I&C) and other concerned were present on the occasion.
