Srinagar: A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from December 30, bringing light to moderate snowfall in parts of the Kashmir Valley, while dry weather is likely to return from January 2 onwards, weather observers said.

According to Kashmir Weather, the region will witness mostly dry and cloudy conditions on December 29, with a possibility of very light snowfall over higher reaches, particularly along the Zojila–Drass axis.

The weather is expected to change on December 30 with the arrival of a new Western Disturbance. Light to moderate snowfall is likely across the Kashmir Valley, especially from the afternoon hours and continuing into the early morning of December 31.

While the primary impact will be in higher reaches, there is a 40 per cent chance of light snowfall over some plain areas if precipitation persists during the night, the forecast said. However, weather models are not strongly supportive of widespread snowfall over the plains.

On December 31 and January 1, mostly cloudy conditions are expected to prevail across Jammu and Kashmir. Light to moderate rain and snow showers are likely during this period, though the system is expected to remain weak. Meteorological observers said significant snow accumulation over the plains is unlikely, but falling temperatures compared to previous days may improve snowfall chances.

“As temperatures are expected to dip, snowfall in a few plain areas cannot be ruled out, though the situation remains under monitoring,” Kashmir Weather said.

The forecast added that from January 2 to January 5, the weather is expected to remain dry across the region, bringing temporary relief from precipitation-related disruptions.

The anticipated snowfall could impact traffic movement on mountain passes, including the Srinagar–Leh highway, particularly near Zojila Pass. Authorities have advised commuters and travellers to remain cautious and stay updated with official advisories.

Weather officials said the overall winter activity so far has been below normal, and the upcoming system is unlikely to result in heavy snowfall. However, even light to moderate snow could lead to localized disruptions, especially in higher altitude areas.

Meanwhile, residents have been advised to prepare for colder nights during the period as temperatures are expected to fall further.(KNS)
