In many schools across Kashmir, mathematics continues to be viewed with fear rather than fascination. A significant number of students perceive the subject as difficult, abstract, and unforgiving. This fear often begins early and deepens with time, leading to poor confidence, exam anxiety, and in some cases, complete disengagement from the subject.
Despite the dedication of teachers and improving educational infrastructure, mathematics has yet to claim its rightful place as a subject of joy and discovery in the Valley’s classrooms.
Why Are Students Afraid of Mathematics? The fear of mathematics is not without reason. Several logical factors may contribute to this situation like Emphasis on memorization instead of concept-building leaves students confused and disconnected. Gaps at primary levels grow into major hurdles at higher classes. Pressure to complete syllabi and secure marks overshadows creative and exploratory learning. Students fail to see how mathematics connects with daily life, nature, technology, and careers. Being termed “weak in maths” damages self-esteem and creates long-term psychological barriers and such other factors.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Turning fear into fascination is as easy as adaptation of the fear. To restore mathematics to its rightful glory as the Queen of Books, thoughtful and practical steps are needed which may include (but not limited to) Concept-Based Teaching: Focus on ‘why’ and ‘how’, not just ‘what’. Activity and Play-Based Learning: Use puzzles, games, math labs, and digital tools to make learning interactive. Teacher Training and Support: Continuous professional development to adopt modern pedagogical methods.
Link Mathematics with Life: From shopping to seasons, architecture to astronomy-mathematics is everywhere. Encouraging a Fear-Free Environment: Mistakes should be celebrated as steps toward learning, not punished.
