Atheism- once considered a marginal or even taboo identity is steadily gaining visibility in many parts of the world.
For many, the word ‘Atheist’ conjures images of hostility towards religion or denial of morality. For some, it is simply the absence of belief in a deity.
Historically, religious beliefs provided a framework for moral- codes, social— cohesion and explanation for life’s mysteries but as scientific inquiry deepens, more people began to question the inherited truth.
According to Gallup International Survey, 10% of respondents worldwide identify as atheists.
In countries like India, open declarations of atheism remains rare. Social norms, family expectations and peer pressure discourage many from publicly identifying as non believers. They remain silent to avoid stigma and backlash.
Every individual holds the right to embrace any faith or none at all. Yet, the pertinent question remains : What drives this shift or choice? Is it genuine outcome of personal conviction and intellectual inquiry, or merely a means to rationalise one’s actions and evade moral obligations ? Alternatively, is it the spectre of religious persecution compelling individuals to seek refuge in atheism.
The reason people choose atheism are : Intellectual and scientific grounds, Philosophical and Moral grounds, Social and cultural influences, Personal experiences, avoidance of restrictions.
Beyond surveys and statistics, the reality of atheism often comes alive through personal encounters. In my own experience, I have come across individuals whose journey toward disbelief followed very different paths than the ones typically discussed in academic debates. Their stories reveal how atheism, for some, is not always born out of deep philosophical conviction, but can also emerge as a personal strategy — a way to step outside the moral and social boundaries imposed by religion. The following case studies offer a closer look at these nuanced and at times uncomfortable, motivations.
Case Study 1:
When I first encountered a certain individual, I had no idea he was an atheist. What struck me most was how astonishingly selfish, arrogant, insensitive and at times, even cruel he could be in his dealings with others. It was only later that I learned of his atheistic stance and it became clear that his disbelief was less a product of deep critical thinking and more a matter of convenience. By rejecting the moral framework that religion provides, he seemed to find justification for acting solely in self interest, free from any sense of higher accountability. This experience reinforced for me that for some, atheism can be a shield against moral obligations rather than a result of intellectual inquiry.
Case Study 2:
Another individual I encountered had a very different path towards atheism. He lived two lives -outwardly he led a life that won him the respect of his community, a responsible family man, dutiful in his commitments and a visible participant in religious rituals. Privately, however, he was living an entirely different life. Away from the public eye, he rejected the beliefs he outwardly portrayed and engaged in practices contrary to the values of his professed faith. By wearing the mask of religiosity in public, he avoided confrontation; by discarding belief in private, he freed himself from the moral restriction of his faith. This person’s story astonished me deeply for he was merely pretending to pray without truly believing in God. Inside, he had no faith at all yet in public, he projected the image of a believer, driven not by conviction but by fear of how society might judge him.
In my opinion, the reason behind his inclination towards atheism was compounded by harshness and injustices he endured at the hands of society. From an early age, his life was shaped by hardship. Childhood had thrust upon him the full weight of family responsibility, and he encountered society’s harshness and injustice long before most children even began to understand the world. Seeking comfort and direction, he initially turned towards religion, embracing its teachings with sincerity. For a time, faith provided him with hope and a sense of order. Yet over the years, disillusionment took root. He came to feel that religion neither addressed his struggles, nor treated him with fairness.
Gradually, he withdrew from it altogether, setting the course for his eventual turn towards atheism.
In his case, not only society at large but those closest to him who failed to understand his struggles forced him to confront his challenges in isolation, he gradually grew hardened, and bitterness took hold — one that, in time, extended even towards his own faith.
In this case, his turn towards atheism did not arrive from carefully considered reasoning, but from the deep frustration , appearing strong for his family, silently enduring his own struggles. Eventually, the strain gave way to exhaustion, and a quiet bitterness settled in. His outlook on the world hardened, marked by mistrust and a growing detachment from anything beyond the material. Faith, once a source of comfort, was abandoned entirely.
In the end, the journey towards or away from the faith is deeply personal, yet it’s motivations cannot be divorced from the values and responsibilities one embraces or chooses to evade. The cases observed here suggest that when atheism emerges not from rigorous reasoning but from a desire to escape moral constraints, it risks becoming less a worldview and more a convenient refuge from accountability. True belief whether theistic Or atheistic, should withstand the test of honest introspection, for it is not the label one carries but the integrity behind it that shapes character and conduct. Ultimately, the question remains : Are people truly turning towards atheism out of genuine, rational and critical thinking or it merely a way to justify their mistakes and escape the restrictions that come with moral obligations from religions.
