BARAMULLA: In a major boost to veterinary healthcare in the region, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, today inaugurated state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical facilities at the Small Ruminant Veterinary Hospital (SRVH) in Chijhama.

Developed at a cost of ₹49 lakh under the Aspirational District Programme (2024-25, 5th Award Money), the initiative aims to significantly upgrade livestock health services in Baramulla and the wider North Kashmir region.

The upgraded hospital now houses a modern X-Ray unit, ultrasonography (USG) setup, and a fully equipped operation theatre. These advanced facilities are set to greatly enhance the hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat a range of conditions in small ruminants.

The X-Ray unit will support a wide spectrum of radiographic studies essential for identifying fractures, internal injuries, and structural abnormalities. The USG unit, using B-mode and Doppler imaging, will assist in obstetric, gynaecological, and abdominal examinations, particularly aiding in reproductive health monitoring.

Similarly, the new Operation Theatre is equipped to handle both routine and emergency procedures, including caesarean sections, hernia repairs, rumenotomies, and orthopaedic surgeries.

Speaking at the inauguration, DC lauded the efforts of the Department of Sheep Husbandry, Baramulla, calling the facility a ‘game changer’ for veterinary care in the region. “This hospital will not only benefit Baramulla but also serve as a key resource for livestock farmers across North Kashmir,” he said. He also announced plans to further upgrade the hospital to expand its reach and service offerings.

District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Dr Showkat Ahmad, briefed the DC on the technical aspects of the new equipment and the expected impact on livestock health and farmer livelihoods. He noted that these facilities would greatly reduce the need for referrals and enable prompt treatment locally.

On the occasion, DC also inaugurated a Kisan Khidmat Ghar within the hospital campus, a one-stop center where farmers can access advisory services, apply for government schemes, and stay informed about animal health and welfare programmes.

The event also saw the felicitation of field veterinarians who recently underwent specialized training in radiology and ultrasonography, organized by the Department of Sheep Husbandry in collaboration with SKUAST-Kashmir’s Faculty of Veterinary Sciences.

The event was attended by senior officers, veterinary experts, scientists, and local livestock farmers.
