Satish Sharma meets Shikara Owners; assesses their issues

SRINAGAR: Satish Sharma, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, and Youth Services & Sports, today interacted extensively with Shikara owners operating in the Dal Lake.

The Minister was accompanied by the Transport Commissioner, Vishesh Paul Mahajan and other senior officials.

The Minister reiterated the commitment of the government towards preserving the livelihoods of the traditional boatmen community while fostering sustainable tourism, a vital pillar of the region’s economy.

During the interaction, the Minister patiently listened to the concerns raised by the Shikara owners. These included difficulties in obtaining and renewing licenses, financial and technical support for boat maintenance, environmental issues affecting the lake’s ecosystem and improved infrastructure around Dal Lake to enhance the experience for both the operators and the tourists.
