Srinagar, June 21: A 14-year-old girl died while her elder sister was rescued after the duo jumped into a stream in Kulangam area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.

Reports reaching GNS said that two sisters – Josiya Majeed Sheikh (14) and Snober Majeed Sheikh (25) of Handwara– jumped into the nallah at Kulangam late Thursday afternoon.

Locals who spotted them jumping inside the water body immediately swung into action and in the meantime, police party who was informed about the incident immediately reached the spot.

The police team and local volunteers retrieved both the sisters and took them to a nearby hospital where Josiya was declared brought dead.

The condition of Snober, married in Sopore, is stated to be critical, reports said.

When contacted, SDPO Handwara, Shabir Ahmad Khan confirmed the incident to GNS and said that one girl was rescued while as another one died.

“It is apparent that the duo committed suicide and a case under relevant sections of law has been registered to ascertain the cause of the incident,” Khan said.(GNS)
